KT-Qualcomm to cooperate for enhanced IoT Security
01/29/2015 | By NETMANIAS (tech@netmanias.com)

KT and Qualcomm agreed to jointly develop an 'LTE-based IoT security gateway solution'.

On January 29, officials from the two companies, including Jae-ho Song, the Senior Vice President of KT's Future Convergence Strategy Office, and Taewon Lee, the Senior Vice President of Qualcomm Korea, met at KT's Kwanghwamoon headquarters and signed an agreement to develop an 'LTE-based Security Gateway Solution'.

According to the agreement, KT will be developing LTE-based IoT security gateway equipment with built-in features like security, integrated control, device control, etc. and the entire solution while Qualcomm will be in charge of supporting optimized LTE chipset-related technologies for developing the security gateway solution. Also, Mexus, a small and medium enterprise (SME) specializing in WCDMA/LTE gateway solution development, will join the project in accordance with the Creative Economy and SME Invigoration Policies of the Korean government.

An IoT gateway enables data collected in the network to be sent/received through LTE/WCDMA. The IoT security gateway to be developed by the two companies will support all the low-power, short-range wireless communication features such as Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth, etc. as well.

In addition to that, it will include some essential security features, like VPN (Virtual Private Network) and UTM (Unified Threat Management), and integrated and device control features, which will make it the best-performing IoT integrated security solution.

KT aims to complete the development of the IoT security gateway solution and commercialize it by the first half of this year. It will be aggressively moving forward to take over the IoT security market in Korea by offering customized security and control to customers, especially those who require a high degree of security like infrastructure developers, financing companies, etc.

At the signing ceremony, Mr. Song of KT said, "As the Internet connection among IoT devices continue to grow, there have been increasing security threats", and added, "To address such threats, KT will continue to work on developing more reliable and secured IoT security service, by taking advantage of the excellent network, security and IoT control technologies that we have accumulated."
