1. Introduction
This Supplier.s Trial Information Note (STIN) 504 provides service description information for customers of the BT Wholesale Content Connect (WCC) family of products. WCC delivers multimedia content, such as video, to broadband End Users (EU) from content servers situated within the BT network.

The WCC CSP product of WCC Basic allows Content Service Provider (CSP) content to be delivered to any internet connected End User  in the UK from caches held within the BT Wholesale network. The content is delivered over the internet .over the top.. The CSP is invoiced by BT Wholesale for this service.

The WCC ISP product of WCC Standard and Premium allows CSP content to be delivered to BT Wholesale ISP End Users from .deep caches. held within the BT Wholesale broadband (IPSC and WBC) network. The Premium service provides an enhanced quality of service over BT Wholesales network. The ISP is invoiced by BT Wholesale for this product.

The information contained in this STIN relates to the trial of a potential service. The publication of this STIN does not commit BT to a commercial launch of this service, nor does it commit BT to the particular implementation described within this document. Should BT decide to commence a full service, this STIN will be replaces by a Suppliers Information Note (SIN).
It should be noted that the information contained within this STIN might be subject to change due to either the results of BT testing, or due to feedback from trial participants. Please check with the http://www.sinet.bt.com  site to ensure you have the latest version of this document.
BT aims to launch the trial service in September 2010 subject to the successful completion of the trial.
Further information regarding the trial can be obtained by contacting mailto:contentconnect@bt.com
2. Service Outline
2.1 Service Options

Figure 1 . BT WCC Service Infrastructure

The BT WCC services including Basic, Standard and Premium will be implemented using the underlying Content Distribution and Delivery (CDD) platform, or capability.

2.1.1 CSP Services
2.1.1.1 WCC Service Configuration

The WCC Service Configuration must be taken before the customer purchases either the Basic, Standard or Premimum or all such services. The  WCC Service Configuration product defines the CDD delivery services (see section 3) and connects the CDD to the CSP´s origin server.

2.1.1.2 WCC Internet Delivery (also known as WCC Basic)

The optional WCC Internet Delivery product allows CSP content to be delivered to any internet connected End User (EU) in the UK from caches held within the BT Wholesale network. The content is delivered across the internet, .over the top., from the appropriate internet-connected CDD edge node.

If an EU requesting the CSP content is a customer of an ISP that has signed up for WCC Standard / Premium then the content will be delivered across the BT Wholesale broadband network from the appropriate ´local´ broadband-connected CDD edge node (also known as a “deep cache”).

2.1.1.3 Origin Server

The optional WCC Origin Server product provides a BT managed master repository for content files. The CSP will be given full control over file management. The CSP makes the content available on the Origin Server and the WCC CDD ingests and distributes the content on demand to the EUs.

2.1.2 ISP Services
2.1.2.1 BT WCC Standard and Premium

The WCC ISP product of WCC Standard and Premium is a feature of BT.s Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) and BT.s IPstream Connect (IPsC) services and allows CSP content to be delivered to BT Wholesale ISP End Users from .deep caches. held within the BT Wholesale broadband (IPSC and WBC) network. Note that the WCC ISP must have a commercial relationship with the CSP.

The Premium service is dependent on the creation of an ´assured rate´ CSP Service Configuration. The Premium service provides an enhanced quality of service over BT Wholesales network.

The provisioning process for WCC ISP Standard and Premium sends the ISP´s End User address range to the CSP so that the CSP can selectively request content delivery to the ISP using the WCC CDD.

2.2 CDD Infrastructure Description
Logically, the BT WCC CDD platform is equivalent to a Content Delivery Network (CDN) but unlike other CDNs, it is capable of delivering content from within the BT Wholesale broadband network.

The infrastructure comprises of:
. Resilient core nodes that enable content ingestion, routing and distribution
. Content delivery via edge nodes (closer to the End User)
. Geographic blocking capability, restricting content delivery to UK End Users only
. Optional Origin Server providing a BT managed master repository for content files.

Note that WCC Standard and Premium are only available to ISPs using the PPP Termination and Aggregation (PTA) service as these services are incompatible with Layer Two Network Server (LNS). However, the WCC Basic service has no restriction - CDD can deliver content to any End User connected to the internet.

2.2.1 End-To-End Service Flow Example

Figure 2- Content Delivery Service Process
A further detailed description of acquisition and delivery of content is available by request only.

3. Delivery Service
3.1 Definition
. A Delivery Service is a configuration of the BT WCC CDD platform
. It specifies how content is acquired from the Origin Server, distributed and cached on the BT WCC CDD and delivered to End Users
. Each Delivery Service is set up for a specific CSP who controls access to content within that Delivery Service
. Each Delivery Service must be linked to a named Origin Server, either the CSP\'s own or provided by BT
. A CSP can have multiple Delivery Services set up. See Section 3.2
3.2 Description
Each CSP service is mapped to a Delivery Service configured in BT WCC CDD which defines, amongst other parameters, the CSP server used for content ingestion (known as the Origin Server), the Service Routing Domain Name (e.g. <CSP Delivery Service ID>.cdd.bt.net) that will form part of the URL returned to the End User  for content streaming.
The CSP Delivery Service ID and WCC Domain will be provided during the ordering process. The BTnet Authoritative DNS will delegate the Service Routing Domain Name to the BT WCC CDD which will in turn redirect the EU client for content streaming.
A CSP may have multiple Delivery Services. However, a single unique Origin Server domain name will be required for each Delivery Service provisioned in BT WCC CDD.
A further detailed description of Delivery Services is available by request only.

3.3 Delivery Process
3.3.1 Delivery Service URL
BT WCC CDD works by forwarding content in relation to a Delivery Service URL.
The Delivery Service URL identifies the actual device on which the content is stored and what mechanism is used in forwarding it.
The Delivery Service URL is made up of:

. The protocol
. Content Service Provider ID
. The Domain Name
. Path to the content files on either BT WCC CDD or your Origin Server
BT WCC CDD delivers the Content, referenced in the Delivery URL, to the End User; assuming the URL is valid within the specified Delivery Service
A Delivery URL redirects an End User.s request for content to the BT WCC CDD and an example is shown with an explanation of each component contained in it

Figure 3 - Delivery URL .- Example

3.3.2 Protocol
The delivery protocol to be used e.g. HTTP or RTMP

3.3.3 CSP ID
The CSP ID which uniquely identifies this Delivery Service.
It is in the format:  cspmmm-nnn
mmm uniquely identifies your company to the BT WCC CDD;
nnn uniquely identifies your particular Delivery Service to the BT WCC CDD

3.3.4 Relative Path to Content
This section of the URL specifies the path to the physical content on your Origin Server.
For example, if the specified origin server is:
http://origin.csp.com
And content is contained within the following directory (and its subdirectories):
http://origin.csp.com/content/
Then the relative path would be:
/content/programme.mpg
/content/subdirectory/programme.mpg
4. Application Level Redirection
Application Level redirection is the method used by BT WCC CDD to connect an EU to its nearest content cache within the BT WCC CDD.

4.1 Application Level Redirection Messages
The CSP specified media player will need to be capable of understanding and responding to Application Level Redirection messages.
These may be received when the Web Server realises that the initial URL has been temporarily redirected to another server.
Three possible messages are:
HTTP 302 or (HTTP)
RTMP 302 message (Flash)
RTSP 302 message (Windows)

5. Securing Access to Content
5.1 WCC CDD URL Signing
As data is easily shared on the internet, BT WCC CDD uses the concept of URL signing which

. Applies restrictions to which End Users can view your content
. Allocates an expiry time to limit the viewing times for these End Users
. Secures URL with a shared key hashing algorithm
A further detailed description of secure access and URL signing is available by request only.
6. Supported Protocols

BT WCC CDD supports the following delivery protocols:

Delivery Protocol
Data Format

HTTP
Many including . MPEG 2, FLV, F4V, MP4, MPEG TS etc

RTMP and variants (e.g. RTMPE)
FLV, F4V, MP4

RTSP and variants (e.g. MMS over HTTP, RTSPT, RTSPU)
ASF, WMV & WMA

MS Smoothstreaming  Smooth encoded MP4

Table 1 - WCC Supported Protocols
A further detailed description of Smoothstreaming including manifest files and raw logs availability is available by request only.

7. BT Hosted Origin Server
The BT WCC CDD Origin Server will support a number of CSPs uploading content files to the hosted storage, which will be dynamically acquired on demand by the BT WCC CDD platform.
Each CSP is provided with a User Account that allows them to login to the FTP/SFTP interface on the Origin Server.
Stored content files will be available to the BT WCC CDD platform to dynamically acquire the content in an on demand basis.

7.1 Logical Architecture
The following figure shows the logical architecture of the BT WCC Origin Server.
The elements and systems shown relate to the configuration and in-life management of the BT hosted Origin Server.
BT WholesaleOrigin Server---------------------------FTP / Web ServerBT WCCCDDBT CloudServicesContent Service ProviderFTP/SFTPEnd UsersHTTP
Figure 4 - BT Hosted Origin Server . Logical Architecture
The primary objective of the BT Hosted Origin Server in the BT WCC CDD environment is to provide the initial content source for the BT WCC CDD.
The CSP will access the Origin Server storage via FTP/SFTP
Each CSP will be able to access the Origin Server over the internet using DNS hostname
Each CSP will be given full file access permissions to add/modify/delete the content
The Origin Server is hosted on a geographically resilient platform utilising BT Cloud services
CSP content data will be held and managed in the UK

8. Geo-Location Server
The BT WCC CDD will provide a geographic blocking capability, restricting content delivery to UK End Users only.
In the context of BT WCC CDD, Geo-Location capability will be used to provide an ability to BT to restrict the content to End User based on their geographic location to help CSPs to adhere to e.g Regional licensing:

. Online broadcasters who serve live streaming video of sporting events or certain TV and music video sites that are licensed to broadcast their videos of episodes/music videos are permitted to serve viewers only in their licensed territories. By knowing the locations of viewers, they can be certain of complying with licensing regulations.

9. Service Availability
A Product Handbook with a full explanation of how this service can be ordered will be generated and updated as we move through the trials.
Terms and Conditions and the Product Handbook will be made available from the
www.btwholesale.com/broadband site.

10. CSP Responsibilities
The CSP will be responsible for EU engagement, including client management (e.g. client downloading, updates, problem resolution etc)
The CSP specified media player will need to be capable of understanding and responding to Application Level Redirection messages See Sect 4.1.
The CSP will be responsible for content and Digital Rights Management. Content will usually need to be encoded and encrypted prior to downloading to meet Digital Rights Management requirements.
For the CSP Hosted Origin Server, domain names will need to be provided and made accessible to BT WCC CDD if the CSP opts to host the Origin Server.
For a CSP with a commercial relationship with an ISP that has contracted with BT for WCC Standard / Premium, the CSP must manage the ISP´s EU IP address range (provided by BT Wholesale) so that the CSP can selectively request content delivery using the WCC CDD.
The WCC Product Handbook will describe the provisioning process and the information exchange with the CSP e.g. shared keys, delivery services.
