Hi There,

I have some basic doubts and looking for some 3GPP references..

During a training I was told that...

When PDP Context establishment request comes to MME it can choose SGW accordingly (As per APN).
Can the decision happen based on QoS also ?

Can MME decide different SGW for different APN requests (Theoretically) ?
Can SGW decide which PGW or PGWs will be part of the session ?
Will SGW do load sharing across 2 or more PGWs ?
S.W. 2013-01-24 16:12:51
When MME gets Attach Request or PDN Connectivity Request,
MME will decide APN to be served for the UE based on the requested APN from UE and profile from HSS for the UE.
After deciding APN for the UE, MME will choose P-GW based on the APN and S-GW based on TAI.
To select P-GW, local configuration (APN-FQDN : PGW mapping) in MME can be used. If there is no APN-FQDN information in the local configuration in MME, then MME will use DNS query with APN-FQDN to get P-GW IP address.

After selecting P-GW, MME will do S-GW selection based on the TA where UE is located.
MME can have local configuration (TAI : S-GW mapping) to select S-GW.

If there is no S-GW information for the TAI in MME, then MME will use DNS query with TAI-FQDN to get S-GW IP address.

Some vendor's MME can select co-located S-GW/P-GW by using additional configuration based on APN and TAI.
S.W. 2013-01-24 16:19:34
Generally, local configuration or DNS can have multiple P-GW IP addresses per APN with different weights and multiple S-GW IP addresses per TAI with different weights.

So, MME can select a S-GW and a P-GW among multiple GWs with weighted round robin method.

Hi,

Is there is any interface between MME/HSS towards PCRF/SPR ?
And is the SPR is a standalone node / Part of HSS ?

Figure : 4 (a) - Step 4 - IP Translation from private(UE) to Public will be taken care by PGW
Figure : 4 (b) - Step 1 - IP Translation from public to private (UE) will be taken care by PGW..?
넷매니아즈 2013-03-04 14:59:31
Kumar!
There is no interface between MME/HSS towards PCRF/SPR.
SPR is a standalone node or integrated with PCRF.

An IP address of a UE is allocated by and taken care of by P-GW.

Thanks.
Kumar 2013-03-05 18:00:24

SGi에 대한 약자를 알고 싶었는데 이것은 개념이지 약자가 아니가 보네요

혹시 정확한 약자가 있다면 알고 싶습니다.

kylix 2015-10-01 11:31:21

TEID(Tunnel Endpoint ID)

I. Introduction
This document presents the LTE network architecture as the first technical document of “LTE” area. The LTE network called EPS (Evolved Packet System) is an end-to-end (E2E) all IP network; EPS is divided into LTE part which deals with the technology related to a radio access network (E-UTRAN) and EPC part dealing with the technology related to a core network. E2E all IP network means that all traffic flows - from UE to PDN (including radio link from UE to eNB) and from PDN to service entity for UEs - are transferred based on IP protocol within EPS.

To provide LTE services to a user over LTE network, the E2E LTE network reference model (NRM) should be comprised of additional BSS/OSS plane for subscriber and service management and application plane for providing services in addition to basic EPS plane. The scope of this document is focused on the basic EPS plane. Among the EPS plane, the architectures for LTE interworking with 3GPP/non-3GPP and roaming are out of scope of this document, and would be described in other technical documents later.

The remainder of this document is organized as follows. The LTE network reference model in defined and the EPS entities and interfaces are explained in Section II. The protocol stacks are described in Section III, and then traffic flow over the LTE network is explained in Section IV.

II. LTE Network Reference Model
Figure 1 shows the LTE network reference model. The LTE network reference model is comprised of LTE entities and EPC entities. In Figure 1, UE and eNB belong to the LTE entities. S-GW, P-GW, MME, HSS, PCRF, SPR, OCS and OFCS belong to EPC entities (LTE standard defines eNB the only entity of E-UTRAN in the specification. However, in this document we classify UE as additional entity of E-UTRAN for the convenience of description). A PDN is internal or external IP domain of operator that the UE wants to communicate with, and provides the UE with services such as the Internet or IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). In the following, Table 1 and Table 2 show the function of LTE and EPC entities. Table 3 gives description of the reference points of the LTE network reference model, and interfaces between EPS entities.

Figure 1. LTE Network Reference Model

Table 1. LTE Entity
Entity Description
UE UE connects to eNB over the LTE-Uu interface.
eNB The eNB provides the radio interface with User and performs Radio Resource Management (RRM) functions such as dynamic resource allocation, eNB measurement & configuration, radio admission control, connection mobility control, Radio Bearer (RB) control and Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC).

Table 2. EPC Entity
Entity Description
MME The MME is the main control entity for the E-UTRAN. It communicates with HSS for user authentication and user profile download, and provides UE with EPS Mobility Management (EMM) and EPS Session Management (ESM) functions using NAS signaling. The main functions supported by the MME are as follows:
 NAS signaling (EMM, ESM, NAS Security)
 User authentication and roaming with HSS over the S6a interface
 Mobility management (Paging, Tracking Area List (TAI) management and handover management)
 EPS Bearer management
S-GW The S-GW terminates the interface to the E-UTRAN. It serves as the local mobility anchor point of the data connections for inter-eNB handover and inter-3GPP handover.
P-GW The P-GW provides access to PDNs by assigning an IP address to the UE. The IP address is assigned from the address apace of the PDN. It serves as the mobility anchor point for 3GPP and non-3GPP handover. The P-GW also performs policy enforcement, packet filtering and charging based on the PCC rules provided by the PCRF. The main functions supported by the P-GW are as follows:
 IP routing and forwarding
 Per-SDF/Per-User based packet filtering
 UE IP address allocation
 Mobility anchoring between 3GPP and non-3GPP
 PCEF function
 Charging per-SDF/per-User
HSS The HSS is the central DB holding user profile. It provides user authentication information and user profile to the MME.
PCRF The PCRF is the policy and charging control entity. It makes policy decision for a UE and provides the PCC rules (QoS and charging rules) to the PCEF (P-GW).
SPR The SPR provides subscription information (Access profile per subscriber) to the PCRF as the PCRF’s DB. Receiving the information, the PCRF performs subscriber-based policy and creates PCC rules.
OCS The OCS provides (i) real-time credit control and (ii) volume, time and event based charging functions.
OFCS The OFCS provides CDR-based charging information.

Table 3. LTE Interface
Interface Protocol Description

Gz GTP’ Interface for the control plane between the OFCS and P-GW.
SGi IP Interface between for the control and user planes between the P-GW and PDN. The IETF based IP packet forwarding protocols are used in the user plain and DHCP and RADIUS/Diameter protocols are used in the control plane.

III. LTE Protocol Stack
Based on the EPS entities and interfaces defined in Section II, the LTE protocol stacks for user plane and control plane are described in Section III.

3.1 Protocol Stack: User Plane
Figure 2 shows the user plane protocol stack for the LTE network reference model. The functions of the major layers of the protocol stacks are briefly described.

1) LTE-Uu Interface
 PDCP: PDCP protocol supports efficient transport of IP packet over radio link. The PDCP protocol performs header compression, Access Stratum (AS) security (ciphering and integrity protection) and packet re-ordering/retransmission during handover.
 RLC: In the transmitting side, RLC protocol constructs RLC PDU and provides the RLC PDU to MAC layer. The RLC protocol performs segmentation/concatenation of PDCP PDUs during construction of the RLC PDU. In the receiving side, the RLC protocol performs reassembly of the RLC PDUs to reconstruct the PDCP PDUs. The RLC protocol has 3 operational modes (transparent mode, acknowledged mode and unacknowledged mode), each offers different reliability levels. The RLC protocol also performs packet (the RLC PDU) re-ordering and retransmission.
 MAC: MAC layer resides between the RLC layer and PHY layer. The connection to the RLC layer is through logical channels and the connection to the PHY layer is through physical channels. Therefore, the MAC protocol supports multiplexing and de-multiplexing between logical channels and transport channels. Higher layers use different logical channels for different QoS metrics. The MAC support QoS by scheduling and prioritizing data from logical channels. eNB scheduler allocates radio resources dynamically to UEs and performs QoS control per radio bearer to be allocated the negotiated QoS.

2) S1-U/S5/X2 Interface
 GTP-U: GTP-U protocol is used to forward user IP packets over S1-U, S5 and X2 interfaces. When a GTP tunnel is established for data forwarding during LTE handover, an End Marker packet is transferred as the last packet over the GTP tunnel.

Figure 2. LTE Protocol Stack: User Plane

3.2 Protocol Stack: Control Plane
Figure 3 shows the control plane protocol stack for the LTE network reference model. The functions of the major layers of the protocol stacks are briefly described.

1) LTE-Uu Interface
 NAS: NAS protocol performs mobility management and bearer management functions.
 RRC: RRC protocol supports the transfer of the NAS signaling. It also performs functions required for efficient management of the radio resources. The main functions are as follows:
- Broadcasting of system information
- Setup, reconfiguration, reestablishment and release of the RRC connection
- Setup, modification and release of the radio bearer

2) X2 Interface
 X2AP: X2AP protocol supports UE mobility and SON functions within the E-UTRAN. To support UE mobility, the X2AP protocol provides user data forwarding, transfer of SN status and UE context release functions. For SON functions, eNBs exchange resource status information, traffic load information and eNB configuration update information, and coordinates each other to adjust mobility parameters using the X2AP protocol.

3) S1-MME Interface
 S1AP: S1AP protocol supports S1 interface management, E-RAB management, NAS signaling transport and UE context management functions. It delivers the initial UE context to the eNB to setup E-RAB(s) and manages modification or release of the UE context.

4) S11 / S5 / S10 Interface
 GTP-C: GTP-C protocol supports exchange of control information for creation, modification and termination for GTP tunnels. It creates data forwarding tunnels in case of LTE handover.

5) S6a Interface
 Diameter: Diameter protocol supports exchange of subscription and subscriber authentication information between the HSS and MME.

6) Gx Interface
 Diameter: Diameter protocol supports delivery of PCC rules from the PCRF to the PCEF (P-GW).

7) Gy Interface
 Diameter: Diameter protocol supports exchange of real-time credit control information between the P-GW and OCS.

8) Gz Interface
 GTP’: GTP’ protocol supports CDR transfer from the P-GW to the OFCS.

IV. Traffic Flow on LTE Network
Figure 4 shows the flow of user plane traffic for accessing the Internet in the LTE network reference architecture. Figure 4 (a) shows traffic flow from UE to the Internet and Figure 4 (b) shows traffic flow from the Internet to UE. IP packets are forwarded through a GTP tunnel on S1-U and S5 interfaces. A GTP tunnel is established per EPS bearer when a user is attached to the LTE network.

Multiple EPS bearers are established on the S1-U and S5 interfaces, so a Tunnel Endpoint Identifier (TEID) is assigned on the end points (UL and DL) of GTP tunnels to identify each GTP tunnel (A GTP tunnel is identified in each entity with a TEID, IP address and a UDP port number. Here, for convenience of description, we consider only TEID to identify a GTP tunnel). The receiving end side of a GTP tunnel locally assigns the TEID value the transmitting side has to use. The TEID values are exchanged between tunnel endpoints using control plane protocols.

When a GTP tunnel is established on the S1-U interface, the S-GW assigns a TEID (UL S1-TEID in Figure 4(a)) for uplink traffic and the eNB assigns a TEID (DL S1-TEID in Figure 4(b)) for downlink traffic. The TEID values of the S1 GTP tunnel are exchanged between the eNB and the S-GW using S1AP and GTP-C messages. Likewise when a GTP tunnel is established on the S5 interface, the P-GW assigns a UL S5-TEID (in Figure 4(a)) and the S-GW assigns a DL S5-TEID (in Figure 4(b)). The TEID values of the S5 GTP tunnel are exchanged between the S-GW and the P-GW using GTP-C protocol.

Figure 4. Traffic flow on LTE network

When a user IP packet is delivered over a GTP tunnel on the S1-U and S5 interfaces, eNB, S-GW and P-GW forward the user IP packet by encapsulating with the TEID assigned by the receiving peer GTP entity. In uplink direction, the S-GW stores a one-to-one mapping between an S1 bearer (UL S1-TEID) and an S5 bearer (UL S5-TEID) to terminate the S1 GTP tunnel and forward the user IP packet into the S5 GTP tunnel. Likewise in downlink direction, the S-GW stores a one-to-one mapping between a S5 bearer (DL S5-TEID) and a S1 bearer (DL S1-TEID) to terminate the S5 GTP tunnel and forward the user IP packet into the S1 GTP tunnel. In figure 4, the procedure that each EPS entity forwards Internet traffic flow is as follows:

a) Traffic flow in uplink direction: from UE to the Internet

① A UE transfers user IP packets to the eNB over LTE-Uu interface.
② The eNB encapsulates the user IP packets with the S1 GTP tunnel header and forwards the resulting outer IP packets to the S-GW. The S1 GTP tunnel header has “TEID” value as the UL S1-TEID, “Destination IP Address” as the IP address of the S-GW, and “Source IP Address” as the IP address of the eNB.
③ After receiving the outer IP packets, the S-GW strips off the S1 GTP tunnel header, encapsulates the user IP packets (the inner IP packets) with the S5 GTP tunnel header and forwards the resulting outer IP packets to the P-GW. The S5 GTP tunnel header has “TEID” value as the UL S5-TEID, “Destination IP Address” as the IP address of the P-GW, and “Source IP Address” as the IP address of the S-GW.
④ After receiving the outer IP packets, the P-GW gets the user IP packets by stripping off the S5 GTP tunnel header and transfers them to the Internet through IP routing.

b) Traffic flow in downlink direction: from the Internet to UE

① The P-GW receives IP packets for a UE over the Internet.
② The P-GW encapsulates the user IP packets with the S5 GTP tunnel header and forwards the resulting outer IP packets to the S-GW. The S5 GTP tunnel header has “TEID” value as the DL S5-TEID, “Destination IP Address” as the IP address of the S-GW, and “Source IP Address” as the IP address of the P-GW.
③ After receiving the outer IP packets, the S-GW strips off the S5 GTP tunnel header, encapsulates the user IP packets (the inner IP packets) with the S1 GTP tunnel header and forwards the resulting outer IP packets to the eNB. The S1 GTP tunnel header has “TEID” value as the DL S1-TEID, “Destination IP Address” as the IP address of the eNB, and “Source IP Address” as the IP address of the S-GW.
④ After receiving the outer IP packets, the eNB gets the user IP packets by stripping off the S1 GTP tunnel header and transfers them to the UE through Data Radio Bearer (DRB) over the radio link .

V. Summary
The LTE network architecture has been presented as the first document of “LTE” technical document series. The LTE network architecture explained in this document has applied to a LTE only network of a single operator and treated the most basic components of a EPS system. Understanding of entities and interfaces of a EPS system becomes the basis for reading the next LTE technical documents. In the next document, as another basic document, we analyze LTE identification and naming applied to the LTE network reference model. These two basic documents would help better understanding of subsequent documents. More advanced LTE architecture including LTE interworking and roaming will be presented in another document later.
