Private 5G Network architecture and digital transformation applications |
5G core control plane sharing: the 5G core control plane is established at the Gyeongnam Technopark headquarters, while each company’s site is equipped with UPF and vRAN.
Building a full 5G set at each company’s site incurs high costs per enterprise due to the expensive 5G core control plane equipment. To reduce 5G network deployment costs for each company, the 5G core control plane is centralized at the Gyeongnam Technopark headquarters in Changwon, and only the UPF and vRAN are installed at Taelim Industrial and Company C sites.

HFR, 5G Core Shared Private 5G Network Construction for the Spread of ICT Convergence Manufacturing Operating Systems in South Korea
HFR announced that it has supplied a core shared private 5G end-to-end solution for cloud-native implementation in collaboration with SK Networks Service as part of an ICT convergence manufacturing operating system development and demonstration project led by the Gyeongnam Techno Park Foundation, which is funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The ICT-converged manufacturing operating system development and demonstration project is a five-year project from 2020 to 2024 to develop open manufacturing operating system technology based on AAS standards for the interconnection and collaboration of automotive parts manufacturing equipment, as well as domestic parts solutions, and to establish a demonstration and operation expansion system.
HFR and SK Networks Service were selected as construction contractors for this project as part of the operational expansion project, and installed a shared core (SMP: Service Management Platform) at the Gyeongnam Techno Park headquarters and customized dedicated base stations (UPF: User Plane Function) and CU/DU, RU at two demand companies, including Changwon Taerim Industry. In addition, they provided a function that enables the rapid and stable deployment of services developed based on local cloud (MEC: Mobile Edge Computing).
This core-sharing 5G network is notable for its demand-driven customized slicing function. Network slicing separates physical network infrastructure into multiple virtual networks, enabling optimized network utilization and cost savings tailored to various service requirements. It is an optimal model for industrial complexes, as it can effectively increase the productivity and digital transformation (DX) of AX industrial complexes.
SK Networks Service stated, “Through HFR's private 5G end-to-end solution, we were able to build a single manufacturing environment, secure network quality, and successfully establish an efficient management and security system.”
HFR stated, “Based on a real-time monitoring system, we have built a safe and reliable 5G network and provided a solution that is optimized for industrial complexes and cost-effective. Through this, we will promote the digital transformation of manufacturing and actively support the establishment of an environment for utilizing IoT and big data necessary for the advancement of smart factories.”
