Hanshin Electric Railway in Japan:

Established local 5G networks at four stations in the Kobe area to enable real-time safety management through AI analysis

As in Korea, the railway industry in Japan faces problems from manpower shortages caused by a decline in the working-age population and from improving passenger transportation safety.

To address these challenges, Hanshin conducted a local 5G demonstration test on the Hanshin Main Line in January-February 2023 to prevent safety accidents at train stations and railroad crossings, respond to in-vehicle emergencies, and instantly inspect facilities between train stations.

The test utilized local 5G, AI video analytics, and cameras (ground cameras at train stations/crossings, in-vehicle security cameras, and vehicle front cameras).

Customer Requirements

  • Hanshin Electric Railway aims to deploy 5G wireless network infrastructure at four stations in the Kobe area, validating real-time safety management services through AI-based intelligent analysis

  • Additionally, they seek to verify high-quality video monitoring at high-speed trains traveling at 80 km/h

Solution: Real-time video detection based on local 5G networks

  • Prevention of ground-level safety accidents at stations and crossings using ground cameras and AI-based video recognition

  • Emergency response inside train cars, with controllers and train operators jointly monitoring in-car security camera footage

  • Automatic inspection of track facilities between stations using train front cameras and AI

Implementation Benefits

  • Real-time sharing of in-vehicle conditions enables rapid response to emergency situations

  • Videos transmitted from cameras installed on tracks or at crossings are analyzed using AI, providing alerts and warning announcements to the train operator in case of potential hazards

  • Using AI image recognition on in-vehicle camera footage helps reduce daily patrol inspection labor costs

① Preventing accidents using ground cameras and AI video analytics

The video from the ground cameras installed at train stations and crossings is streamed to the AI analytics server through the local 5G network, and the AI server determines the accident situation and streams the identified dangerous situation to the crew terminal through the local 5G network.
In addition, it notifies the danger situation through a speaker at the scene of the accident.
By quickly informing train crews of dangerous situations at train stations or railroad crossings, accidents can be prevented in advance.

② Reducing manpower for routine inspections through front-view cameras

         and AI video analytics

The video from the camera installed in front of the train is streamed to the AI analytics server through the local 5G network.
The AI server automatically detects facilities abnormalities based on the video and delivers the live video to the maintenance worker's terminal. This lightens the load on maintenance workers and reduces the number of maintenance workers.

③ Respond to emergencies by sharing security camera video from train cabins

in real time with station staffs and train crews.

If a situation arises on the train that threatens passenger safety, passengers can report it using the emergency reporting app. The in-vehicle security camera video is streamed to the terminals of the station staff and train crew through the local 5G network, and the station staff and crew share the current situation in real time and respond urgently to ensure passenger safety.
