SK Telecom today announced that the company, together with Samsung Electronics, successfully completed development of ‘True Real Time Mobile Streaming’ technology that is essential for mobile live streaming and achieved its world’s first demonstration over commercial LTE network.
The users of legacy live video streaming over mobile networks have experienced inconvenience with up to 15 seconds of latency compared to TV or IPTV. For example, in case of watching sports games such as soccer, mobile users could watch the game results about 15 seconds later than TV or IPTV users.
However, ‘True Real Time Mobile Streaming Technology’, applied with the next generation media transport standard, MPEG Media Transport (MMT), improves live mobile streaming experience for smartphone and tablet users by significantly reducing latency.
By successfully demonstrating the technology with Btv Mobile, SK Telecom’s mobile IPTV service, SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics confirmed that the latency was reduced by 80 percent to record 3 seconds.
The companies will also jointly promote diverse research and developments for performance improvement and stabilization of the technology with plans to provide commercial service within 2015 and global standardization through 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).
Park Jin-hyo, Senior Vice President and Head of Network R&D Center, said, “True Real Time Mobile Streaming Technology resolves technical challenges of providing high quality live video streaming over mobile networks without latency. SK Telecom will put more efforts to strengthen its mobile network service quality by developing innovative and advanced technologies.”
