LG U+ co-developed an open SDN with Ericsson-LG
09/01/2015 | By NETMANIAS (tech@netmanias.com)

In response to a surging number of smart devices and the upcoming Big Data era, totally new types of services, like unmanned remote controlled devices, cloud platform, etc., are to be available in the market sooner than expected.

Intelligence networks capable of managing massive connectivity efficiently in the current IoT and the coming 5G environments are to be built, helping faster delivery of new services. This will eventually provide users with more chances to experience a wider range of IoT and 5G services.

LG U+ announced on the 1st that it, jointly with Ericsson-LG, has developed an application-based Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology that would allow operators to launch new services faster and have them work effortlessly.

The SDN is a software-based technology that decouples software-run controllers from network equipment. Capable of application-based service interworking, systematic centralized management, cloud network automation, etc., the SDN is considered as an ideal tool for realization of intelligence networks in 5G.

SDN technology development so far has been focused more on South Bound Interface (SBI) between network equipment and controller. However, the new SDN technology enables Ericsson-LG's SDN platform to interwork with applications through open API-driven North Bound Interface (NBI), consequently facilitating systematic automation of network management.

LG U+ is planning to apply the technology along with Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in its current networks by the end of the year first, and then ultimately in 5G networks to secure the foundation for building intelligence networks.

SDN controller by Ericsson-LG will be in charge of managing SDN switches, components of IP·transport network, and virtualized applications. It will also allow for end-to-end management by working with the orchestration layer of could service.

Changgil Cho, Head of Access Network Development Center from LG U+ said, "We have successfully developed an application-based network through combination of SDN switch co-developed with ubiQuoss, and open SDN controller developed by Ericsson-LG." He went on, "We will continue to lead development of a next-generation network with an open architecture by expanding the technology to 4-tera equipment jointly developed with ubiQuoss through continuous collaboration with Ericsson-LG."

Kyoungin Kwon, Head of Customer Solution Division at Ericsson-LG also noted, "The successful co-development of SDN technology with LG U+ will serve as a meaningful cornerstone that will help us lead the 5G and IoT era."
